“Emergency blood is needed for a patient who is about to undergo surgery. Those who wish to donate are urgently requested to apply to the blood center.”
Mithat
had heard this announcement countless times while waiting in hospital
courtyards since he was a child.
He
had always been a restless boy, and many accidents had happened while he chased
after children older than him. The last time they gathered, they had climbed a
huge plane tree and were eating ice cream. The older kids jumped down from the
branch one by one. Seeing them, Mithat also let himself drop. And that was when
everything changed. Mithat began to scream in intense pain. Neighbors rushed to
the tree as soon as they heard him.
Mithat
was trying hard not to cry, but the pain was unbearable. As soon as his father
heard the news, he ran over. He had a special fondness for Mithat because he
was his firstborn. After Mithat was rushed into emergency surgery and came out
wrapped in bandages, his father’s eyes filled with tears.
—
“My brave boy, this will all pass. You’ll stand up even stronger.”
—
“Dad, my arm hurts so much… will it always hurt like this?”
—
“No, son. No pain lasts forever. You’ll have pain for a while, but it's
temporary.”
—
“It feels like it will never end.”
—
“Life is never always good or always bad. There are moments we’re happy and
moments we’re sad. This experience taught you a lesson. Being careless brought
you to a painful situation.”
Months
passed after the incident. Mithat’s pain had subsided, but something still felt
wrong with his arm. He couldn’t use it as he used to. When they returned to the
doctor, they learned that the muscles in his casted arm had weakened.
—
“What should we do, doctor?”
—
“Your son needs regular arm exercises to strengthen the muscles. And he
should also drink bone broth—it will help him regain strength.”
—
“Do you hear that, son? From now on, we must be more careful about exercise
and nutrition.”
—
“Of course, Dad. As long as you’re by my side supporting me, I’ll recover
quickly.”
After
months of exercise, Mithat was able to use his arm more comfortably. His
teachers at school supported him as well. During gym activities, they gave him
exercises suited to his condition.
On
weekends, he went to help his father at construction sites. Mithat loved
breaking bricks with a sledgehammer, so the foreman always gave him that task.
The more he worked, the stronger and more muscular his arms became.
Eventually,
Mithat finished high school and was preparing for the university entrance exam.
In truth, he wasn’t very eager to go to university; he was fascinated by
electrical installation work. But he didn’t want to disappoint his father, so
he tried his best to study.
Just
before the exam, news came from his father’s workplace. His father had had an
accident and was rushed into emergency surgery.
A
person cannot truly understand urgency until it touches their own life. Now
Mithat felt it deep in his bones—how agonizing it was to wait helplessly. This
time, emergency blood was needed for his father’s surgery.
He
asked his former teachers at his school for help. He requested that they inform
students about the importance of donating blood in emergencies. The school
principal, Mesut, contacted the Red Crescent and organized a blood donation
campaign at the school.
Then
he remembered the words his father always used to say:
“Taking precautions eliminates what needs to be prevented.”
Now Mithat had become a volunteer in the blood donation campaign himself and began encouraging his friends to donate as well.
